Remember you're not inerested in particulars (Louies drum store on Boylston...), but what types of functions create the character of the site--music & student services stores on Boylston, etc.. What's on Mass Ave,Newbuy, etc. This information is most useful in the areas directly surrounding the site--no more than a couple of blocks.
On anther level--let's say the general Boston downtown/Back Bay/Fenway area--you should get the general zoning info. from the City of Boston to discover zoning use patterns (residential, commercial, industrial...) Good luck with the detective work.
